Shimmer Rotterdam Launches 'Ageless, Ageless' Program with Warburgian Lens
Shimmer, an art space located in Rotterdam, has launched a new initiative called 'Ageless, Ageless,' which will continue until June 30, 2026. This program is inspired by Aby Warburg's idea of Pathosformel—dynamic visual motifs that transcend time—to investigate collective cultural expressions such as lullabies, call-and-response interactions, threshold rituals, and mourning rhythms. The title is derived from a line in Jeff Buckley's 'Mojo Pin' (1994), linking to devotional music and the artistry of Sufi vocalist Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The initiative features exhibitions, artworks, writings, and collaborative studies that view memory and presence as forms of continuity. The inaugural exhibitions showcase works by Cally Spooner, Fernanda Gomes, Thomas Fougeirol, and Pam Virada, with Spooner incorporating an open window as an artwork and a sound loop, while Gomes offers raw sculptures, Fougeirol presents dust-accumulated paintings, and Virada creates a bubble-filled stairwell alongside a multi-channel live stream installation, debuting 'Mr. Carp' by Mukoda Kuniko. The program receives backing from Gemeente Rotterdam and Amarte.
