Shilpa Gupta and Marisa Merz in Dialogue at MAXXI L'Aquila

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The exhibition "visibileinvisibile," showcasing the works of Indian artist Shilpa Gupta (born 1976, Mumbai) and Marisa Merz (Turin, 1926–2019), is currently on display at Palazzo Ardinghelli in L'Aquila. Merz is noted as the sole female representative of Arte Povera and was awarded the Golden Lion at the 2013 Venice Biennale. Curated by Fanny Borel and directed by Bartolomeo Pietromarchi, this show marks the opening of MAXXI L'Aquila's 2023 season. Gupta's pieces, such as "100 Hand Drawn Maps of Italy" (2021), "Song of the Ground" (2007), and "Rejected Sand Clocks" (2023), delve into themes of borders and memory, with some works created during the pandemic reflecting on isolation. She also co-wrote "For, In Your Tongue, I Cannot Fit" with Salil Tripathi, which examines confinement and her idea of "everyday art."
