SHIJI COMMONS: Reclaimed Stone Houses Become Community Hub in China
In Sanzao Town's Hengshiji Village, located in Zhuhai, China, StudioTiltedCircle has converted two traditional stone structures into a modern community hub known as SHIJI COMMONS. The initiative honors cultural identity and material history by carefully dismantling and repurposing existing stone walls, merging them with concrete and metal elements. This innovative design enhances the space through strategic interventions, allowing natural light to accentuate the stone and concrete textures. SHIJI COMMONS features a versatile public program for community events and cultural exhibitions. Spanning 400 sqm with a building area of 321 sqm, it revitalizes the traditional stone house, creating a communal area deeply connected to local heritage and contemporary rural life.
