Shezad Dawood's Leviathan Project to Debut in Venice

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Artist Shezad Dawood's multimedia project Leviathan will launch in May 2017 in Venice, with a secret venue. The project includes a 10-episode fiction series, a film, and fantasy stories set in a post-apocalyptic future after a solar cataclysm. Episodes are told from different characters' perspectives as they wander Europe, Asia, and North Africa. The narrative blends news clips, documentaries, and original footage shot at London's Natural History Museum and an abandoned island in the Venice Lagoon. Episodes will be released online from February 2017, with the first three screened in Venice as part of a larger installation. Leviathan reflects on environmental issues and migration, showing how indifference and cultural clashes can lead to extreme consequences. Supporters include CNR-ISMAR Marine Sciences Institute and Fortuny in Venice. The tour, running until 2020, has already signed on Mostyn (directed by Alfredo Cramerotti in Llandudno, Wales), Plymouth Arts Centre (UK), and A Tale of A Tub (Rotterdam).
