Shezad Dawood's 'Concert From Bangladesh' streams mixed-reality music event on August 1
On Sunday, August 1, 2021, at 6 PM, a mixed-reality music event named 'Concert From Bangladesh' will be available for streaming in Dhaka, London, and New York. This innovative concert, commissioned by UBIK Productions and the Samdani Art Foundation, features a virtual reality stage designed by British-South Asian artist Shezad Dawood. It pays homage to the 1971 'Concert For Bangladesh' organized by Ravi Shankar and George Harrison to support refugees during the Bangladesh Liberation War. Co-curated by Diana Campbell and Bangladeshi producer Enayet Kabir, with assistance from Ruxmini Choudhury and Shoummo Saha, the concert highlights various Bangladeshi musical styles, including Baul singers, experimental electronics, and Dhaka hip hop. Proceeds from donations, merchandise, and digital album sales will benefit both the musicians and the Bangladeshi charity Friendship, which focuses on healthcare for climate change refugees and women's rights. The event is facilitated by Pioneer Works and backed by the British Council Digital Collaboration Fund, with additional support from Yorkshire Sculpture International and Chisenhale Gallery. It aims to celebrate Bangladeshi artistry while reflecting on the historical solidarity of the original 1971 concert.
