Sheung Yiu Explores Facial Recognition Histories at C/O Berlin
C/O Berlin is showcasing Sheung Yiu's solo exhibition titled "(Inter)faces of Predictions," which will be on display until June 10, 2026. The artist-researcher, originally from Hong Kong and based in Finland (b. 1991), explores the cultural and technological use of faces in predicting character and future outcomes. This multimedia exhibition features a blend of photographs, found footage, installations, and a video essay. Yiu employs his own visage to illustrate recurring cognitive patterns—such as reliance on clear signs, the desire for order, and the risks of stereotyping—connecting East Asian face reading, Western physiognomy, and contemporary facial recognition. The exhibition's circular design, inspired by the ouroboros motif, symbolizes feedback loops in machine learning. Drawing from Aby Warburg's Mnemosyne Atlas, Yiu's visual archaeology incorporates found footage related to spiritual interpretations, pseudoscientific classifications, and technical enhancements. Contrasting prints on calligraphy paper and stone-engraved text fragments with metallic, illuminated surfaces, the video essay features Yiu as an avatar navigating a landscape that transforms into his own face, contemplating deepfakes and synthetic imagery. Curated by Veronika Epple, this exhibition has been supported by the Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung through the C/O Berlin Talent Award since 2020.
