Sherif El Azma's Sculptural Offerings at Mashrabia Gallery
Sherif El Azma is debuting his first exhibition at Mashrabia Gallery of Contemporary Art, featuring sculptural pieces crafted in his Fustat studio located in Old Cairo. This exhibition delves into materiality and symbolic expression through various forms, including sculptures, objects, reliefs, and photographic works. Notable highlights are the 'story trays' presented as offerings and a collection that resembles ancient Greco-Roman offering tables. The exhibition addresses themes of ritual, remembrance, and mortality through architectural elements. El Azma's miniature sculptures, shaped by geo-evolutionary influences, were produced alongside a team of sculptors, resulting in small statuettes. Born in Manchester in 1975, he graduated from the Surrey Institute of Art and Design in 1997 and has been teaching at the American University in Cairo since 2008, with his works displayed in numerous galleries and festivals.
