Shenkar College censors nude portrait of Israeli minister, prompting department head resignation
A nude painting of Israeli Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked was censored at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design's graduate exhibition. Following complaints, college president Yuli Tamir ordered artist Yam Amrani to cover the portrait's face with tape as a compromise measure. Tamir justified the decision by stating the work presented a sexist statement about a woman who is also a political figure. Continued objections led to the painting's complete removal from the show. The censorship controversy prompted Larry Abramson, Head of the Department of Multidisciplinary Art, to resign his position. Abramson cited difficulty accepting Tamir's directive given the values she represents and how she runs the institution. The incident was reported by Jewish Design News in July 2016. The artwork depicted Shaked, who is a member of the Bayit Yehudi political party.
