Sheila Pinkel's Never-Before-Seen 1970s Cyanotypes Shown at Higher Pictures
Higher Pictures in New York is presenting Sheila Pinkel: Early Works, 1974–1977, the artist's fourth solo exhibition with the gallery and the first public showing of these works. The exhibition comprises twelve cyanotypes that include body prints, abstracted compositions, and early uses of computer-generated imagery. These pieces reveal the experimental foundations of Pinkel's long-term investigation of light, form, and materiality. In the Body Cyanotypes, Pinkel used the sun as a light source, exposing at midday for maximum contrast, resulting in surrealist effects where the figure floats, contorts, and multiplies. Pinkel noted that the medium allowed her the latitude to evolve new images.
