Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of its armed forces, is the driving force behind Saadiyat Island's ambitious cultural development. This luxury resort complex features what's described as the world's largest single cluster of world-class cultural assets, including a Louvre museum designed by Jean Nouvel and a Guggenheim museum by Frank Gehry. The scale of the project has drawn significant attention, with former U.S. President George W. Bush visiting Abu Dhabi earlier this year to personally examine models of the development. Thomas Krens, longtime Guggenheim Director, left his position to focus on the Saadiyat Island project, describing it as 'pharaonic' in scale earlier this year. The project represents a major cultural investment in the United Arab Emirates, positioning Abu Dhabi as a global cultural destination through museum-brand partnerships with major international institutions.
