Sheela Gowda Awarded 2019 Maria Lassnig Prize with Solo Exhibition at Lenbachhaus Munich
Sheela Gowda has been selected as the recipient of the 2019 Maria Lassnig Prize, a biennial award established by the late Austrian artist Maria Lassnig before her death in 2014. The prize, administered by the Maria Lassnig Foundation and Lenbachhaus Munich, provides €50,000 and a major solo exhibition at Lenbachhaus scheduled for March 2020. Born in 1957, Gowda studied in London and now lives and works in Bangalore. Her international exhibition history includes participation in Documenta 12 (2007), the Venice Biennale (2009), the Kochi Muziris Biennale (2012), and the Biennale de Lyon (2007). Recent solo presentations have been held at Ikon in Birmingham (2017), Pérez Art Museum Miami (2015), and Para Site in Hong Kong (2015). Lassnig created the award to offer significant support to mid-career artists, having achieved recognition herself later in life. The prize aims to provide a decisive career advancement opportunity for artists at this stage.
