She-Wolves: Pioneering Feminist Video Art Online Exhibition

The online exhibition 'She-Wolves_erotism>love>body' at Re_Exhibit_ Rewind Online Gallery, curated by art historian Laura Leuzzi, showcases feminist video art from the 1970s and 1980s. The show features five pioneers—Antonie Frank Grahamsdaughter, Bettina Gruber, Živa Kraus, Lydia Schouten, and Maria Vedder—plus a recent work by Italian artist Elisabetta Di Sopra. The concept draws from Clarissa Pinkola Estès's book 'Women Who Run with the Wolves' (1992), exploring the analogy between women and she-wolves. Works include Grahamsdaughter's 'Transit' (1986), made while a student at Jan Van Eyck Academie in Maastricht, which aligns female body movements with wolves hunting; Schouten's 'The Lone Ranger Lost in the Jungle of Erotic Desire' (1981), a video installation addressing female desire; and Di Sopra's 'Senza Tracce' (2023), filmed in Wadi Rum, Jordan, where she walks barefoot erasing her footprints. The exhibition is visible until August 31. Leuzzi co-directs the gallery with Adam Lockhart, aiming to stimulate new research and commissions around early video art, building on the 'Rewind' archive of over 500 British video artworks and projects like 'EWVA' and 'Rewinditalia'.
