Sharon Lockhart's Polish Pavilion at 2017 Venice Biennale Centers on Collaboration with Rudzienko Girls

exhibition · 2026-04-20

At the 2017 Venice Biennale, American artist Sharon Lockhart showcases her project Little Review, which will be on display from May 13 to November 26 in the Giardini. This initiative began in the summer of 2015 with girls from Rudzienko, a sociotherapy center located near Warsaw, and was facilitated by Polish educator Bartek Przybyl-Olowski through various workshops. The project expanded to include more workshops in 2016 and 2017. Drawing inspiration from Janusz Korczak, who published Mały Przegląd between 1926 and 1939, Lockhart partnered with the Korczak Orphanage and the National Library of Poland. The exhibition comprises a film, photographs, and translations of the newspaper, which Lockhart considers a feminist manifesto. She also previously participated in the Biennale in 1997.
