festival-fair · 2026-04-20

Zoe Butt, Omar Kholeif, and Claire Tancons have been appointed by the Sharjah Art Foundation to curate the 14th Sharjah Biennial, named Leaving the Echo Chamber, which is set to launch in March 2019. Each curator will present a unique exhibition that delves into themes like migration, diaspora, time, and historical interpretations, reflecting the biennial's emphasis on artistic expression in the face of challenges such as climate change and human destruction. Zoe Butt's Journey Beyond The Arrow focuses on human mobility and survival strategies, while Omar Kholeif's Making New Time explores the concept of time from both personal and collective perspectives. Claire Tancons's Look for Me All Around You examines obscurity and darkness as potential sites for future insights. Hoor Al Qasimi, President and Director of the Sharjah Art Foundation, highlighted that the competing narratives of contemporary life prompt essential inquiries into the evolution and conditions of art, aiming to enhance context through immersive artworks. The biennial will showcase artists from around the world, including those from the UAE and neighboring areas, addressing the persistent cycle of information known as the 'echo chamber.'
