Sharjah Art Museum and Jordan National Gallery present Roots and Modernity exhibition on Mediterranean Arab art

exhibition · 2026-04-22

Running until 24 November, the exhibition Roots and Modernity at Sharjah Art Museum is a joint initiative with the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts. Curator Alya Al Mulla highlights that this collaboration encourages dialogue among artists from various Mediterranean Arab countries, including those in North Africa, Egypt, and the Levant. By merging traditional styles with contemporary techniques, the exhibit showcases how the region's cultural richness influences modern Arab art. Notable pieces include Sliman Mansour's Mother Palestine (1986), symbolizing Palestinian strength, and Fahrelnissa Zeid's Feast in the Desert (1957), which incorporates European modernist elements rooted in Arab culture. Dr. Khalid Khreis curated the show to represent diverse perspectives, enhancing the exploration of Mediterranean artistic heritage through various media.
