Shanghai's Spring 2018 Exhibition Highlights: Wang Zhibo, Li Ming, Michael Dean, Group Show, and Kathleen Ryan
Shanghai hosts five notable exhibitions through May 2018, curated by ArtReview Asia. At Edouard Malingue Gallery, Hangzhou-based Wang Zhibo presents 'He No Longer Looks Human' until May 6, featuring figurative paintings that challenge traditional genres and gender hierarchies through blurred faces and absurd juxtapositions. Li Ming's '1703' at Antenna Space runs through May 4, transforming the gallery with video, sound, and installation to memorialize artistic space and processes, following his 2017 Hugo Boss Asia Award win. British sculptor Michael Dean's first China solo exhibition 'Analogue LOL' at ShanghART until May 13 concretizes social media language with sculptures featuring dyed books and emojis, building on his standout work at Skulptur Projekte Münster 2017. Rockbund Art Museum presents 'Walking through the Fade Out Lines' through May 27, a group exhibition from Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo's collection featuring international artists like Maurizio Cattelan and Charles Ray, with new commissions by Shanghai-based Zhang Ruyi. Kathleen Ryan's 'Man Made Moon' at CC Foundation & Art Center until May 27 showcases three works including the ceramic and steel 'Frequency' (2018), exploring lunar aesthetics with delicate yet tough sculptures. These exhibitions highlight diverse contemporary practices from digital spectacle to material transformation.
