Shang'Ao Canal Social Service Center by Atelier Liu Yuyang Architects

In 2024, Atelier Liu Yuyang Architects finalized the Shang'Ao Canal Social Service Center in Shanghai, a 3,865 m² renovation situated at the junction of Quanzhou Road and Shang'ao Tang Waterfront Path. This facility acts as a cultural center for the Hongmei Subdistrict within Xuhui District, featuring a senior cafeteria, community library, performance venue, and dance studio. Led by Liu Yuyang and project leader Wang Chuxue, the design emphasizes a revamped façade and reimagined public spaces to improve both aesthetics and functionality. This center plays a vital role in the urban waterfront revitalization of the Shang'ao Tang neighborhood, aspiring to be a unique cultural landmark. The team comprised Wu Congbao, Fan Zhikang, Zhu Chenglin, Xu Jiarui, and landscape designers Liu Yuyang, Fan Zhikang, and Yu Qing. Collaborating firms included Yi Architecture Studio and FLIP Design Studio, with interior signage crafted by Wanbang Zhihe. Structural consultants Shi Wei and Zhang Yaxiong, along with M&E consultant Shanghai Sanjiang Mechanical & Electrical Technology Co., Ltd., were also involved. The construction was managed by Shanghai Housing Technology Construction Development Co., Ltd., with Shanghai Huicheng Construction Development Co., Ltd. as the contractor. The site covers 2,244 m², enhanced by additional landscaped areas of 4,500 m² on Quanzhou Road and 2,520 m² on Yizhou Road. Photographs were taken by Fangfang Tian.
