Shahpour Pouyan's DNA-Inspired Ceramics and Photographs Explore Diaspora Identity at Dubai Gallery
Shahpour Pouyan's exhibition 'My Place is the Placeless' at Lawrie Shabibi in Dubai presents a forensic response to questions of origin through genetic ancestry. The Iranian artist took a DNA test four years ago revealing heritage spanning 33 countries, from Norway to Bhutan. This personal data became the foundation for 33 colorful ceramic sculptures arranged on an open steel cube, each representing a distinctive dome from one of his ancestral regions. Recognizable forms include Viking-era stave church roofs, Iranian yakhchāl icehouses, and early Syrian earth architecture. The installation functions as an architectural chromatogram derived from genetic material. Accompanying photographs depict historical artifacts from ancient civilizations, including manuscripts, currency, and busts of leaders. One image references murdered Syrian archaeologist Khaled al-Asaad, highlighting artifacts' contemporary vulnerability. Another photograph portrays a man labeled 'Classic Mediterranean, convex nose, Dulaimi, Iraq,' invoking scientific racism in biological anthropology. All background faces in these photographs have been modified to resemble Pouyan's features, inserting the artist into historical narratives. The exhibition ran from 6 November to 15 January, appearing in the Spring 2018 issue of ArtReview Asia. Pouyan's work challenges assumptions about genetic makeup and national identity through meticulous material investigation.
