Shahidul Alam Released, Nan Goldin Wins RPS Medal, Singapore Art Museum Awards
On November 20, Shahidul Alam, a photographer and human rights activist from Dhaka, was released after being imprisoned for over 100 days. His arrest was linked to controversial statements he made during a Facebook Live and an interview with Al Jazeera about the government's response to student protests in August. Although he's facing charges of spreading propaganda, he remains optimistic about the release of others. Amnesty International has urged Bangladesh to drop these charges. In other developments, Nan Goldin received The Royal Photographic Society's Centenary Medal and Honorary Fellowship, while the Singapore Art Museum honored Weixin Quek Chong and Yanyun Chen as the winners of the President's Young Talents. Furthermore, Irene Aristizábal will become Head of Curatorial and Public Practice at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in March 2019.
