Shadi Ghadirian's Miss Butterfly Weaves Metaphors of Confinement and Hope

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Iranian photographer Shadi Ghadirian, born in Tehran in 1974, continues to live and work in Iran despite censorship. Her series 'Miss Butterfly' (2011) marks a new phase in her practice, shifting from earlier ironic works to a more poetic and formalist approach. The series consists of fifteen black-and-white photographs depicting women weaving large spider webs in front of windows and doors, symbolizing their confinement and longing for freedom. Unlike her earlier series such as 'Like Every Day' (2000), where women's faces are replaced by kitchen utensils, 'Miss Butterfly' eschews irony for a denser, more intimate narrative. Ghadirian draws on the myths of Arachne and Penelope, as well as Puccini's opera 'Madame Butterfly,' to explore themes of waiting, domesticity, and resistance. The weavers are not passive but active agents, producing their own webs—a metaphor for both the oppressive Iranian society and the women's own strength. Ghadirian notes that in Islam, the spider is benevolent, having protected the Prophet during his flight to Medina. The series was exhibited at Silk Road Gallery in Tehran from April 22 to May 22, 2011. Ghadirian has shown internationally, including at Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2008), Aeroplastics Contemporary in Brussels (2009), and Guild Art in Mumbai (2010). She expresses hope for the future, stating, 'The future will be better, because we are here.'
