SFMOMA to Suspend 75,000 Kites in Jacob Hashimoto’s Giant Arc

On August 22, 2026, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) will present “Jacob Hashimoto: Giant Arc,” marking the most extensive installation of Hashimoto's work to date, featuring around 75,000 kites displayed in the museum's lobby. Constructed from bamboo and Japanese paper, the canopy draws inspiration from the Sonoran blue butterfly and local Northern California plants such as the dahlia and checker lily. Visitors will have the opportunity to appreciate the intricate craftsmanship from below, where each hand-made component contributes to the overall piece. Hashimoto characterizes the artwork as “chaotic and meditative.” An opening event on August 20 will include a discussion between Hashimoto and SFMOMA Curator Joseph Becker, followed by a performance by Nico Georis, providing a fresh immersive experience for attendees.
