institutional · 2026-05-04

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) has partnered with the NBA's Golden State Warriors to loan artworks from its collection for display at the Chase Center, a new sports and entertainment arena opening in September 2019 in San Francisco's Mission Bay neighborhood. The initial loans include Alexander Calder's 1963 mobile "Untitled" and Isamu Noguchi's "Play Sculpture" (1975, fabricated 2017), to be placed at the west entrance and in Thrive City plaza respectively. SFMOMA will also commission site-specific works from local artists David Huffman and Hughen/Starkweather for the east entrance. The Chase Center, seating 18,064, is part of the privately financed Thrive City development, which includes 13,000 square meters of public plazas, offices, restaurants, retail, and wellness programs. The arena will host nearly 200 events annually, including Warriors games, concerts, and cultural events. A contemporary art installation by Olafur Eliasson is also planned for the district. Warriors president Rick Welts stated the partnership aims to make Chase Center and Thrive City a must-visit destination.
