SFMoMA acquires over 100 works by artists with disabilities in partnership with Creative Growth
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMoMA) has acquired more than 100 artworks from the Creative Growth Art Center, a Bay Area nonprofit founded in 1974 that supports artists with disabilities. The acquisition coincides with Creative Growth's 50th anniversary and is part of a three-year partnership that includes two exhibitions and a site-specific commission for SFMoMA's Bay Area Walls series. The first exhibition, opening in spring 2024, will feature works by Joseph Alef (b. 1981), Camille Holvoet (b. 1952), Susan Janow (b. 1980), and Dwight Mackintosh (1906–1999), among others. William Scott (b. 1964), known for murals depicting San Francisco city life, will create a new work for the series. SFMoMA director Christopher Bedford stated the partnership reflects the museum's commitment to diversifying its collection and prioritizing accessibility. Creative Growth executive director Ginger Shulick Porcella noted that artists with disabilities have long been overlooked but now occupy museum walls worldwide.
