Sexualité et Transcendance at PinchukArtCentre, Kyiv

exhibition · 2026-04-23

The PinchukArtCentre in Kyiv presented 'Sexualité et Transcendance' from April 24 to September 19, 2010, featuring 150 works by 19 international artists including Jeff Koons, Anish Kapoor, Matthew Barney, Tino Sehgal, Louise Bourgeois, Jan Fabre, Cindy Sherman, Takashi Murakami, Boris Mikhaïlov, Sarah Lucas, Paul McCarthy, Jenny Holzer, and the Russian collective AES+F. Curated by Eckhard Schneider, the exhibition explored the intersection of reality and imagination through provocative contemporary art. Despite free admission and extensive advertising attracting large crowds, the show lacked a cohesive curatorial vision and failed to connect with the local Ukrainian context. Notable works included Sarah Lucas's 'Nuds' (2009), Paul McCarthy's performance videos, Jeff Koons's 'Balloon Rabbit', and Jenny Holzer's 'Inflammatory Essays' (1979-1982). The site-specific installation 'The Feast of Trimalchio' (2010) by AES+F at the Bessarabskiy Market successfully bridged contemporary art and everyday Ukrainian life, contrasting decadent imagery with the market's bustling commerce.
