Seven inflatable chairs revive 1990s blow-up furniture trend

architecture-design · 2026-05-03

Following IKEA's launch of the PS 2026 Easy Chair at Milan Design Week, Dezeen highlights seven inflatable chair designs that revisit the 1990s teen-bedroom fad. The PS 2026 Easy Chair by Mikael Axelsson for IKEA features two inflatable cushions trapped within a metal frame, inflated via foot pump, with a deflatable central area for comfort. American brand Jell-O released The Jelly Collection, referencing jelly moulds in red, orange, yellow, and green, targeting Gen-Z and Millennial decor trends. Milanese studio Older's Zhora chair, inspired by Blade Runner, combines a bent stainless-steel frame with an inflatable PVC cover. Riley Hooker's Sit(uation) is a worm-like seating system of twisting inflatables connected by zippers, designed for easy rearrangement. IKEA's Brännboll gaming chair challenges stereotypical gaming furniture aesthetics and is described as IKEA's first successful inflatable piece after a failed 1990s attempt. The Decorators' Sofa-Bread serves both lounging and bread dough proving, encouraging human-bacteria engagement with fermentation. Chinese designers Ray Jiao and Yi Wang's Holding-Breath Chair uses an inflatable bag with foam particles that molds to the sitter's body and resets via valves.
