Seven Dutch Hotels Celebrate 100 Years of De Stijl

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

The Netherlands is marking the centenary of De Stijl with year-long celebrations across the country. The movement, founded in 1917 in Leiden by Theo van Doesburg through the eponymous magazine, sought to create a universal visual language blending art, architecture, and design. Key figures included Piet Mondrian, Gerrit Rietveld, and Bart van der Leck. A route titled "From Mondrian to Dutch Design" connects 14 cities. Seven hotels have been specially adapted: Hotel Van der Valk in Drachten (where Van Doesburg lived) uses primary colors and orthogonal lines; De Tabaksplant in Amersfoort (Mondrian's birthplace) features a room designed by Mondrian and some of his paintings; Bilderberg Europa Hotel in Scheveningen painted its facade like a Mondrian composition; Park Hotel Den Haag in The Hague renovated its interiors in De Stijl style and displays Mondrian reproductions; Mercure Tilburg has rooms inspired by Mondrian; Inntel Hotels Art Eindhoven occupies a former Philips lamp-testing tower with 250 De Stijl-inspired rooms; and Kapellerput Heeze integrates primary colors and black-and-white lines into its eco-friendly design.
