Sesc_VideoBrasil Rebrands as a Biennial with Focus on Southern Geopolitics and Imagined Communities

festival-fair · 2026-04-23

The 21st Sesc_VideoBrasil Contemporary Art Biennial has begun, with a call for submissions open until August 10. The project is curated by Solange O. Farkas, along with Gabriel Bogossian, Luísa Duarte, and Miguel López. Centered on contemporary art and the Global South, this biennial adopts the curatorial theme 'Imagined Communities' inspired by Benedict Anderson, exploring nationalism and featuring artists from various ethnic backgrounds, particularly indigenous populations. Selected pieces will be displayed at Sesc 24 de Maio in São Paulo from October 2019 to February 2020. Farkas emphasizes the importance of this theme for addressing issues of marginalized communities and distorted nationalism, highlighting art's capacity to stimulate dialogue on these topics in the Global South.
