Sesc Ipiranga launches book on indigenous cultures and Harald Schultz collection
The book 'Culturas Indígenas no Brasil e a coleção Harald Schultz' has been unveiled by Sesc Ipiranga, curated by Ana Carolina Delgado Vieira and Marília Xavier Cury. This work focuses on the importance of preserving indigenous cultures within museums and emphasizes the necessity for indigenous perspectives in curating photographic collections. It includes writings from ethnologist-photographer Harald Schultz, who, between 1942 and 1965, amassed approximately seven thousand artifacts, films, and photographs, now housed in MAE-USP's field archive. The publication is structured into four sections: Schultz's journey, museological inquiries, collection studies, and the iconography representing 12 ethnic groups, highlighting a decolonial narrative where indigenous individuals increasingly voice their own stories.
