Serralves Foundation in Porto Opens New Álvaro Siza Wing

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

On February 24, 2024, the Serralves Foundation in Porto inaugurated a new wing designed by Álvaro Siza, the Pritzker Prize-winning Portuguese architect who originally designed the museum in 1999. The expansion, called the Álvaro Siza Wing, adds 50% more exhibition space, including areas for permanent collection displays, temporary shows, and storage for new acquisitions. The inaugural exhibition, "Improbable Anagrams" (February 24 to August 24, 2024), features 160 works by 80 artists, plus a site-specific installation by Luísa Cunha. Concurrently, the exhibition "C.A.S.A." (curated by Antonio Chupina) presents materials from Siza's archive, which he donated to Serralves in 2015. The wing also houses 5,000 previously stored artworks. Serralves, the second most visited museum in Portugal with 1.15 million visitors in 2023, is set in an 18-hectare park. The foundation was established in 1987 when the state purchased the estate, which includes the Art Deco Casa de Serralves (restored by Siza in 2021). Foundation President Ana Pinho stated the wing honors Siza's decades-long collaboration, which also includes the Casa do Cinema Manoel de Oliveira (2019) and the Casa dos Jardineiros (2021).
