Serpentine Launches Online Game by Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley That Turns Moral Judgment into Play

digital · 2026-05-21

Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley has just released a new online game called I DIDN'T REALISE YOU THOUGHT LIKE THAT, launched by Serpentine. This interactive experience invites players to face moral dilemmas at a door, turning ethical choices into part of the game. It builds on her earlier work, THE DELUSION, which was showcased at Serpentine North from September 2025 to January 2026. Available on web and mobile, the game draws inspiration from her graphic novel Below the Blue Line, where negative online feedback comes to life. Players encounter various characters, including influencers and conspiracy theorists, while a live feed mirrors social media trends. With visuals reminiscent of early 90s gaming, the project, which collaborates with Beyond Code Collective and is backed by the Glass Castle Foundation, aims to grow through community workshops. Brathwaite-Shirley, a Black Trans artist and community archivist from London and Berlin, uses this game to prompt players to reflect on ethics and self-discovery.
