Sergio Vacchi centenary exhibition at Capodimonte Museum in Naples

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte in Naples hosts 'Sogno mediterraneo. Sergio Vacchi' to mark 100 years since the birth of the Bolognese painter Sergio Vacchi (Castenaso, 1925 – Siena, 2016). The exhibition focuses on works produced between 1959 and 2006. Vacchi's connection to Naples dates to 1965, when he exhibited at the gallery 'Il Centro'. His visionary, erudite painting was supported by collectors Sophia Loren and Carlo Ponti, who acquired over one hundred of his works. A 1967 photograph by Dan Forer shows Loren posing next to her portrait by Vacchi. The exhibition includes the cycle on Frederick II, with 'La telefonata di marmo' and 'L'amante di Federico II di Hohenstaufen' (both 1966). Other key works are 'Primo memoriale organico' (1959), 'Per un volto del paesaggio' (1962), 'Iter itineris secondo' (2005), and 'Della Melancholia Seconda'. The show explores Vacchi's surreal, mythological imagery and his use of material experimentation.
