Sergio Staino, dean of Italian satire, dies at 83
Sergio Staino, renowned Italian satirist and cartoonist known for creating Bobo, passed away at the age of 83 following treatment for retinal degeneration. He was born in 1940 in Piancastagnaio, Siena, and initially pursued architecture before making his mark with Bobo's first appearance in Linus in 1979. Staino contributed to various publications, including Il Messaggero, l'Unità, La Stampa, Avvenire, and Il Riformista. His accolades include the Satira Politica prize in 1984 and the Yellow Kid Award at Lucca Comics. In 1986, he established and led Tango, created Teletango for Rai Tre, and wrote the film Cavalli si nasce (1989). He served as UAAR's honorary president in 2003, co-directed l'Unità from 2016 to 2017, and produced around 11,000 cartoons. His autobiographical works include Io sono Bobo (2016) and Quell'idiota di Bobo (2020).
