Sergio Rojas Chaves Explores Human-Nature Relationships Through Ethnobiological Art

artist · 2026-04-20

Sergio Rojas Chaves delves into the relationships between humans and other living beings through his unique ethnobiological art. In 2017, he hosted a performance called Plantas de Paseo at Despacio in San José, Costa Rica, inviting people to walk through the city with houseplants and reflect on their connection to nature. Another project involved participants wearing 'houseplant-masks' while blindfolded on forest excursions, allowing them to imagine being houseplants discovering the outdoors. Chaves also manages the artist-run space Nos Vemos in San José, nurturing new talent. His art has been showcased worldwide, including at Museum Tinguely in Basel and Kunstverein Langenhagen in 2018. He participated in the Alter Academia Residency in 2017 and has exhibited at various biennales and festivals.
