Sergio Lombardo: 'European art is a pile of postmodern junk'

An exhibition showcasing the work of Sergio Lombardo, an 85-year-old trailblazer in Italian Pop art, is currently on display at the Galleria Comunale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Arezzo, running until June 2, 2024. The exhibition, titled 'Una programmatica differenza' and curated by Moira Chiavarini and Simone Zacchini, presents over 50 pieces created from the late 1950s to the present, with support from Magonza. In a recent interview with Artribune, Lombardo labels European art as 'postmodern junk' and elaborates on his Stochastic Painting technique. He differentiates his scientific methods from those of abstract expressionists and critiques AI's uniformity. His latest series, 'Stochastic Unpredictable Faces,' simplifies facial features into geometric shapes, while he distances himself from Pop art, expressing discontent with Andy Warhol and America’s influence on Italian culture.
