Sergio Cavandoli on Preserving His Father Osvaldo's Legacy

artist · 2026-04-26

During Milano MuseoCity, Sergio Cavandoli reflects on his father, Osvaldo Cavandoli's contributions to animation. Osvaldo, who lived from 1920 to 2007, is renowned for creating the minimalist character La Linea. His career began as a graphic designer in WWII, after which he joined the Pagot brothers' studio to learn Disney-inspired animation. He was a trailblazer in stop-motion puppet animation in Italy with Pupilandia, developing innovative techniques with diverse materials. Frustrated by the complexity of puppet-making, he opted for minimalism with La Linea. In 2017, Sergio converted the family studio into a museum, offering educational initiatives. That same year, Osvaldo was honored as an Illustrious Citizen in Milan's Monumental Cemetery. A traveling exhibition is currently in Lombardy and Piedmont, including Rozzano in May and Gorgonzola until June 6, with a book launch at the Turin International Book Fair in May.
