Sergia Avveduti and Arturas Bumšteinas Win Carapelli for Art 2020
The third edition of the Carapelli for Art prize, established in 2017 by Tuscan oil company Carapelli for its 125th anniversary, has announced its winners. The 2020 edition attracted 1,720 artists from 80 countries, who were invited to reflect on the theme "Roots" (history, tradition, identity). A jury comprising curators Elisa del Prete, Matteo Innocenti, Gabriele Tosi, and Artribune editorial director Massimiliano Tonelli selected winners in two categories: Open (professional artists) and Accademia (art students). Sergia Avveduti and Arturas Bumšteinas won the Open category; Silvia Bertoldo and Carlos Casuso won Accademia. Special mentions went to Valerio Veneruso (Open) and Max Mondini (Accademia). The total prize fund is €12,000, and winning works enter Carapelli's collection. Avveduti's piece "Freccia Esplosa" explores the root of origin through a mysterious journey blending vision and introspection. Casuso's work "X- About Credit and debt II" engages with painting's history, referencing the Deposition of Christ and iconographic studies from 1000–1500 AD. Both artists noted the influence of the global health emergency on their work: Avveduti emphasized art's political role in uncertain times, while Casuso's piece, developed between May and June 2020, depicts a seated, folded figure evoking exhaustion and decay, reminiscent of the mocked Christ.
