Serge Martin's Study of Georges Lambrichs' Les Cahiers du Chemin
A new book by Serge Martin, published by Honoré Champion, examines Georges Lambrichs' influential literary journal Les Cahiers du Chemin (1967-1977). Lambrichs, a Belgian-born writer who previously worked at Minuit and Grasset, directed the journal under the Gallimard umbrella. The journal emerged from Lambrichs' earlier collection 'Le Chemin,' launched in 1959, which lasted until his death in 1992 and published nearly 300 titles by authors such as Michel Butor, J.M.G. Le Clézio, Henri Meschonnic, and others. Les Cahiers du Chemin ran for thirty issues, featuring experimental and contemporary works. Martin's thesis focuses on what he calls 'the poetics of a journal,' situating it between the venerable NRF and the avant-garde Tel Quel, founded seven years earlier at Seuil. Notably, the first issue opened with Pierre Guyotat, an author associated with Tel Quel, who also published his novel Tombeau pour cinq cent mille soldats in the same year within the collection. The journal's success included prize-winning novels like Jacques Borel's L'Adoration (Goncourt 1965) and Le Clézio's Le Procès-verbal (Renaudot 1963).
