Serena Fineschi Profanes Renaissance Masters at Marignana Arte in Venice

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Serena Fineschi (Siena, 1973) presents 'Sacro e Profano' at Marignana Arte in Venice, a solo exhibition that playfully desecrates canonical works from the Tuscan Renaissance to Rothko. Using everyday materials like Bic pens, Ferrero Rocher wrappers, and lipstick, Fineschi reinterprets Simone Martini and Lippo Memmi's 'Annunciation' with a meticulous row of shiny gold wrappers on MDF, replacing the Madonna. Paolo Uccello's 'Battle of San Romano' becomes a chromatic cue for a volley of chewed paper bullets shot from a blowpipe. Piero della Francesca's 'Madonna della Misericordia' and Masaccio's 'Madonna dell'Umiltà' are transformed into portals crossed by intricate Bic ink lines opening onto an uncertain future. Baudelaire's 'Fleurs du mal' are rendered as dark lipstick imprints of the artist's anus. Rothko-inspired works, part of the 'Trash Series' (2020), use green and blue Bic Cristal pens on paper to create obsessive labyrinths that 'deceive waiting', with shades from violet to black, red to fuchsia. A packing paper piece bears Fineschi's bite marks, expressing frustration with a new studio and light. The exhibition runs from 2021 to 2022.
