Serena Bertolucci appointed new director of M9 Museum in Mestre

institutional · 2026-04-27

Serena Bertolucci, former director of Palazzo Ducale in Genoa, has been appointed as the new director of the M9 Museum in Mestre, effective January 1, 2024. The decision was announced by the board of the Fondazione di Venezia, which manages the museum. Bertolucci succeeds Luca Molinari, who led the museum for the past three years. The museum, inaugurated in late 2018, focuses on 20th-century history. Bertolucci's appointment follows controversy over her non-renewal at Palazzo Ducale, where she served for five years. Despite strong public attendance, her contract was not extended due to limits on consecutive mandates. Bertolucci expressed dissatisfaction on Facebook, noting that the Ministry of Culture allowed second mandates for other directors. Fondazione president Michele Bugliesi praised Bertolucci's experience and passion. Bertolucci stated she chose M9 with both mind and heart, citing its blend of citizenship and memory. She holds degrees from the University of Genoa and Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, and previously directed the Museo e Giardino Botanico di Tremezzo, Palazzo Reale, and Galleria Nazionale di Palazzo Spinola. She was also project manager for Genoa Italian Capital of Book 2023 and led a Pnrr project on accessibility.
