Sequences VI Real Time Art Festival Explores Temporality Through Nordic Absurdity

festival-fair · 2026-04-20

Markús Þór Andrésson curated the ten-day Sequences real time art festival, established in 2006, exploring themes of temporality and life's inevitable end through a Northern European lens of absurdity and gritty humor. Gretar Reynisson's retrospective Decade featured collections documenting everyday repetition, including 365 Glasses, One a Day (2003) displaying dated drinking glasses and 52 Shirts, One a Week. His vitrine presented ten photographic series like Lights (2006) and Hallways-In (2004) capturing mundane life facets. Curver Thoroddsen's The Fine and Delicate Art of Archival Processing (2011) presented audio recordings of his defecations over a month in a pitch-black cellar. Emily Wardill's 76-minute film Game Keepers Without Game (2009) depicted a girl in social care with mental health issues against an antirealist white backdrop. Aleesa Cohene's Yes, Angel (2011) used cinematic collage to address the AIDS crisis and queer identity through appropriated movie clips. Magnús Logi Kristinsson performed endurance works including being confined in a box with limbs protruding and resting a paint-caked arm on a pedestal at the Einar Jónsson Museum. These works collectively examined the body as arbiter of lived time, reflecting Andrésson's curatorial meditation on mortality.
