Sentry Bridge Reopens in Watkins Glen State Park with Lightweight Design

A new Sentry Bridge has been completed in New York's Watkins Glen State Park, replacing a stone-clad arched bridge from the early 20th century. The project was led by schlaich bergermann partner (sbp), Snøhetta, local craftsmen, and engineering consultants. The bridge spans 46 feet between two rock cliffs, 54 feet above water. It uses a shot-peened stainless steel structure and concrete formed from rough sawn hemlock, with a bluestone landing. Weighing 17 tons, it is 90 percent lighter than its predecessor, reducing environmental impact. The design incorporates a "half arch" to address deterioration on the south side, supported by micro piles drilled 70 feet into the rock. A bronze viewing box, generated from a 3D scan, replicates the old bridge at a child's eye level. Tunnels and stairs were also renovated, with new lighting and black locust wood railings. The project aimed to reinterpret the historic bridge's qualities rather than replace it, drawing on the park's history of wood bridges and 1930s stone cladding.
