Senga Nengudi Awarded 2023 Nasher Prize for Sculpture
Senga Nengudi has been named the 2023 Nasher Prize recipient by the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, Texas. The award, established to honor living artists who expand sculpture's potential, includes a $100,000 cash prize and a ceremony on 1 April, 2023, where she will receive an award designed by architect Renzo Piano. Nengudi's practice, noted for addressing human body fragility and resilience, encompasses sculptures, performances, films, and photography. She gained recognition through her involvement with the Studio Z collective in 1970s Los Angeles and connections to New York's Just Above Midtown Gallery (JAM). A recent survey, Topographies (2021), was held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Nengudi is the seventh winner, following artists like Nairy Baghrahaim (2022) and Doris Salcedo (2016). Additionally, a major exhibition of her work will open at Dia Beacon in New York on 17 February, 2023.
