Second Edition of Mark Fisher's Capitalist Realism Released with New Introduction

publication · 2026-04-20

A new edition of Mark Fisher's 2009 book Capitalist Realism: Is There No Alternative? has been published by Zer0 Books. The volume includes a foreword by Fisher's wife Zoe Fisher and an afterword by co-publisher Tariq Goddard, along with an introduction by Alex Niven that contextualizes the work for contemporary readers. Fisher's original text critiqued the inability of contemporary culture to imagine alternatives to neoliberal capitalism, coining terms like 'depressive hedonia' to describe the affective state produced by late capitalist environments. The book gained significant influence following Fisher's death in January 2017, becoming a key text for politically engaged younger generations during periods of austerity and protest movements. While some references have aged, Fisher's analysis of how politics and culture converge on stagnation remains relevant in 2023 despite different challenges like climate crisis and rising nationalism. The author drew from critical theorists including Slavoj Žižek and Fredric Jameson while incorporating personal experiences with mental health and teaching. Fisher's other works include Ghosts of My Life (2014), The Weird and the Eerie (2016), and posthumous collections K-punk (2018) and Post-Capitalist Desire (2021).
