Sebastian Jefford's 'Procrustean Flatulence' exhibition at Gianni Manhattan blends sculpture and dystopian fiction

exhibition · 2026-04-20

From 10 March to 28 April 2018, Gianni Manhattan in Vienna hosted Sebastian Jefford's exhibition titled 'Procrustean Flatulence.' This Royal Academy alumnus showcased an installation that merges sculptural assemblages with an imaginative narrative. At the heart of the exhibition lies a video work called 'In the City,' featuring a synthesized Welsh voice that tells a bleak tale centered on stringent building regulations. Notable wall-mounted sculptures include 'Sometimes I can't tell if you're my world or my Wilson,' 'Borborygmatic Hearsay,' 'Aggressively Indeterminate Biscuit,' 'Lovely Pungent,' and 'Dandruff Castle,' while floor pieces feature 'Buried Earth Motors.' Jefford draws inspiration from Claes Oldenburg, blending Ed Kienholz's cynicism with the literary style of Edgar Allan Poe. The title alludes to Procrustes, symbolizing the constraints of artistic interpretation.
