Sean Scully's Wall of Light Series Explored in New Solo Exhibition at Thaddaeus Ropac

The Thaddaeus Ropac gallery presents a solo exhibition named "To Feel," showcasing Sean Scully's oil paintings and watercolors from his early Wall of Light series. Launched in 1998, this series features vertical and horizontal color blocks that evoke the appearance of brick structures. Dark hues, reminiscent of dense wooden beams, alternate with brighter shades, creating rhythmic patterns in the artwork. The inspiration for this series traces back to a small watercolor Scully painted in Mexico in 1984, capturing the dance of sunlight and shadows on the ancient Mayan ruins in the Yucatán Peninsula. Intrigued by the textures and the stones' reflection of time, Scully later broadened his exploration to other regions and light conditions.
