Sean Kelly Gallery opens second location in Taiwan

institutional · 2026-05-04

Sean Kelly Gallery, a British-owned gallery based in New York, is opening a second permanent space in Taiwan, responding to the growing Asian art market. The new venue, located in Taipei, will be small (under 250 sqm) and operate by appointment only, with two to four exhibitions per year. The inaugural show is scheduled to coincide with the Taipei Dangdai art fair in January 2019, which was founded by former Art Basel Hong Kong director Magnus Renfrew and runs alongside the 11th Taipei Biennial (November 17, 2018 – March 10, 2019). Gladys Lin, a veteran with over a decade of experience in international contemporary art, has been appointed director of the Asian operations, overseeing artist and client relations and exhibition initiatives. Kelly noted that many collectors live in the region and that Taiwan is strategically located with good connections to Hong Kong, Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, and Australia. The gallery represents artists including Marina Abramović, Joseph Kosuth, James Casebere, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Julião Sarmento. Founded in 1991 in SoHo, the gallery moved to Chelsea in 2001 and to Hudson Yards in 2012, in a space designed by architect Toshiko Mori.
