Scripta Festival 2019 in Florence: 'Cuore di tenebra' explores neocolonialism

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

Scripta Festival, the annual contemporary art publishing event, returns to Florence for its third edition from October 3 to 6, 2019. Curated by Pietro Gaglianò, the festival is titled 'Cuore di tenebra' (Heart of Darkness), referencing Joseph Conrad's novel. Gaglianò argues that the current era is neocolonial rather than postcolonial, citing the exploitation of the Global South by North Atlantic powers. The festival program includes books on colonial issues, such as Gian Maria Tosatti's 'New Men's Land. Storia e destino della Jungle di Calais,' and feminist texts, including the complete Italian edition of Valerie Solanas's writings and a collection of Francesca Alinovi's works edited by Matteo Bergamini and Veronica Santi. Venues include the Museo Marino Marini and Villa Romana, where a screening of Chiara Fumai's video 'Chiara Fumai legge Valerie Solanas' (2013) will take place. Artist Francesco Lauretta serves as the festival's 'padrino,' creating an installation on women reading, displayed at Libreria Brac and Museo Marino Marini for a month. Other events include a performance by John De Leo and a talk by Stefano Bartezzaghi. The festival is promoted by Libreria Brac.
