Scott Gibbons and freddie Murphy on Art, Music, and Creativity

other · 2026-04-27

In an interview on Artribune, musician and composer Scott Gibbons (born 1969 in Belleville, IL) and artist freddie Murphy (born 1977 in Treviso, Italy) share their definitions of art and music. Gibbons, known for electroacoustic and dark ambient work under the pseudonym Lilith, has collaborated since 1998 with Italian theater directors Romeo Castellucci (Golden Lion at Venice Biennale Teatro 2013) and Chiara Guidi of Societas Raffaello Sanzio. He also worked with pyrotechnic company Groupe F on commissions including the 120th anniversary of the Eiffel Tower in Paris and events at the Palace of Versailles. Murphy co-founded the Italian project Father Murphy (2004–2018) with Chiara Lee, blending rock, psychedelic folk, drone, post-punk, analog electronics, and free jazz, and performed across Europe, North America, Australia, and Russia. The duo collaborated with US singer-songwriter Jarboe (Swans). Both artists reflect on the nature of art and music: Gibbons cites the red ladder-shaped painting in the La Pasiega cave (over 64,000 years old, Spain) as his favorite visual artwork, created by a Neanderthal. Murphy favors Rei Naito's immersive sculpture Bokei (Matrix, 2010) at the Teshima Art Museum designed by Ryue Nishizawa in Japan.
