Scott Campbell relocates to Los Angeles, citing New York's rejection of creative community

artist · 2026-05-05

Tattoo artist and visual artist Scott Campbell, born in New Orleans in 1976, has moved from New York to Los Angeles, where he opens a tattoo studio and luxury cannabis brand Beboe. Campbell, who previously worked at Picture Machine in San Francisco and collaborated with stars like Heath Ledger, Courtney Love, Jennifer Aniston, and Johnny Depp, as well as brands Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton, told the Los Angeles Times that New York has rejected the community of 'weirdos,' artists, and creatives, where people buy art as investment and store it in warehouses, while in Los Angeles people hang art on walls and give it life. His new LA space will function as a co-working studio where tattoo artists pay rent but keep their earnings, aiming to create a community of artists inspiring each other. Campbell's move reflects a broader trend of art initiatives and institutions opening in Los Angeles, including there-there, a production company and exhibition space in East Hollywood; the Marciano Art Foundation, created by the Guess founders in a former Masonic temple near Koreatown, purchased for $8 million; and the ICA – Institute of Contemporary Art, formerly the Santa Monica Museum of Art, designed by Kulapat Yantrasast of wHY on 4,000 square meters at 1717 East Seventh Street, with branding by artist Mark Bradford, who represented the US at the Venice Biennale. Campbell's New York shop Saved Tattoo remains open.
