Sci-Fi Rooftop Screenings at LA's Westin Bonaventure

Afterall magazine organized a three-week rooftop film series titled 'Making Strange: Rooftop Sci-Fi at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel' in Los Angeles in August 2008. The screenings took place on Thursdays (August 14, 21, and 28) at 8:15 pm on the Plaza Pool Deck, 4th floor of the Westin Bonaventure Hotel and Suites, located at 404 South Figueroa Street. The series featured low-fi cult features and artist videos using science fiction elements to comment on earthly issues. The lineup included Charles and Ray Eames's 'Powers of Ten' (1977) and Andrei Tarkovsky's 'Solaris' (1972) on August 14; Joan Jonas's 'Double Lunar Dogs' (1984), Martha Colburn's 'Lift Off' (1999), Mike Kuchar's 'Sins of the Fleshapoids' (1965), and George Kuchar's 'Ascension of the Demonoids' (1985) on August 21; and John Coney's 'Space is the Place' (1974) on August 28. The event was free and supported by the Westin Bonaventure Hotel. Attendees were encouraged to bring blankets and pillows. Parking options included street parking, City National Garage on Flower Street ($10 with validation), and hotel valet ($25).
